  1. In a copy of the workbook, enter 1 in A5 and 2 in A6.
  2. Select both cells.
  3. Drag the small fill handle at the lower-right corner down to A9.
  4. Check that the result is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. If necessary, choose Fill Series from Auto Fill Options.

You do not need to hold Shift. A single starting number may be copied rather than continued. Two starting values establish the intended pattern.
