For ordinary one-way ANOVA with k groups and N observations, between-group degrees of freedom are k − 1 and residual degrees of freedom are N − k. Mean squares divide sums of squares by their degrees of freedom. F compares the between-group mean square with the residual mean square.
Report F with both degrees of freedom, the p-value, group summaries, and a suitable effect estimate. These formulas do not describe every repeated-measures, unequal-variance, or mixed model.
